Max Weber'in sosyolojiye kazandırdığı karizma kavramı, kişiye yüklediği doğaüstü yetenekler açısından psikolojiktir, ancak kitleler üzerindeki algı ve etkisi bakımından sosyolojik bir terim olarak değerlendirilmiştir ve sosyal psikoloji disiplini içerisinde incelenir. Karizma terimi, günümüzde Tanrı vergisi ve doğaüstü bazı yeteneklere sahip kimseler için kullanılmaktadır. Karizmatik otorite bütün yönleri ile bürokratik egemenlik ve ekonomik yapıların tam zıddı bir konumdadır. Parasal ekonomi, gelir, vergi ve benzeri gibi iktisadi/mali sistemlere dayanmaz. Karizmatik lider günlük hayatın gereksinimlerini sağlamak için para ve gelir düzeni içindedir, fakat ondan beslenmez, otoritesini maddi çıkar ve parasal gelir üzerine kurmaz.

The concept of charisma, introduced to sociology by Max Weber, is psychological in terms of the supernatural abilities it attributes to a person, but it is considered a sociological term in terms of its perception and influence on the masses and is analyzed within the discipline of social psychology. Today, the term charisma is used for those who possess certain God-given and supernatural abilities. Charismatic authority is in all aspects the opposite of bureaucratic sovereignty and economic structures. It is not based on economic/fiscal systems such as monetary economy, income, taxes and so on. The charismatic leader is in the money and income system to provide the necessities of daily life, but he does not feed on it, nor does he base his authority on material interests and monetary income.
